Only TEN left: Sad Story Of a Marine Mammal

It’s called the vaquita (or little cow), and they are world’s most endangered marine mammal. Their population has now been reduced to a handful of numbers.

Two of the ten that still live. (P.C.-Mexican News Daily)

This small mammals habitat is only the northern part of california and whenever a lucky individual will spot them, it is very common that either they will be alone or in a small group of 2-3.

Although, the scenario was not always this bad for them. In a report published this year, it was suggested that only two decades ago, the number of these critically endangered animals were around 600.

The death of these creature can’t be attributed to the huntings as in many of the endangered species cases, rather they are killed indirectly and sometimes unintendedly by the illegal gill nets used by fishermen.

In 2017 the number of these little cows (meaning of vaquita) was declared to be only 30, then a number of organizations and individuals came forward to improve the scenario, for instance Sea Shepherd, VIVA Vaquita.

A unpleasant sight (P.C.- Pinterest)

Though those efforts have been plenty but they were ineffective to save the creature, as in a report by the International Committee for the Recovery of the Vaquita (CIRVA), it was pointed that 50% declination in their number took place in the last 3 years.

If the situation does not improve immediately, the Phocoena sinus (scientific name) might vanish from the seas in this year or decade. It will be another sad entry to a already long list of extinct species in our lifetime.
